Artist Statement #5

For the fifth hack, we were supposed to look at one of our previous hacks and expand upon it, perhaps giving it a deeper meaning or providing an expansion into the details of the previous hack. For this hack, I decided to look back into my third hack for the course, my Software Invasion of Spotify, which I used in a completely different way than it was intended. For a refresher here is the artist statement for that hack, which I had renamed Mixify as a play on words from Spotify, but incorporating the baking element of creating recipes through playlists.

The Creative Process

My first iteration was an expansion of what I had already created in Spotify, playlists consisting of recipe ingredients & instructions because I thought it would be cool to make an extension of what I had already started in my previous hack. However, after looking at the instructions, I realized that I would have to put more thought into my work in order to “fundamentally reimagine it.” For the first portion of my work, I spent time trying to expand the recipe idea into a entire recipe book of sorts, even creating AI images of the different desserts in order to make a cohesive folder of these recipes which was made up of American Classics.

However, once I started actually making these different playlists, I felt as though what I was doing wasn’t fulfilling enough to be a deliverable for this project. Which brought me back to square one after a good chunk of time working on this first version of my project. When I was thinking of what I could do, I looked into previous ideas that other Spotify users had done and noticed a trend of making “POV” playlists where they would make up scenarios such as taking an exam and being unsure of the answers to certain questions, labeled “POV: you’re trying to complete a test.” With this, my mind started heading in a different direction of trying to do a point of view playlist, and my focus was more on “POV: Dr. Seuss reads you ‘Green Eggs & Ham'” but once I started creating this playlist, I deemed it useless because Spotify already has a feature where you can follow along with the lyrics of a song, or in this case, a story.

So, yet again, I was back at square one and getting a little desperate because I didn’t have much time to start over from scratch before we needed to present our hacks to the class. I went back through the Reddit subreddits that I had been looking at previously and that is when I started digging deeper into the playlists and seeing what I could make up that maybe Spotify doesn’t offer. This is where I found even more playlists labeled as “POV” that furthered my thought process into my creation, when I found playlists such as “POV: ordering McDonald’s in France.” Though the idea of this specific playlist was silly, it helped me think about how vast the song/audio collection on Spotify is, and how sticking to one language would be restricting me in ways that I was previously unaware of. I also had begun thinking about how the “Green Eggs & Ham” already had the lyrics available for listeners, but only in English. With these two thoughts intermingling in my brain, I then came up with my final idea, which was to use Spotify playlists in way of translating songs as this is something that Spotify hasn’t accomplished yet. Once I started delving into this realm more, I realized that this is an idea posed by many Spotify users as noted on the Spotify community page here.

Once I had locked in this idea of translating lyrics, I then had to look into what song/artist I wanted to use and whether it would be better to translate from a different language to English or vice versa. In terms of choosing what language to translate from, I had decided Spanish would be easiest since I know both English and Spanish already, and I decided to translate a Spanish song into English because I had already worked on searching for songs with specific wording in English with the previous hack, as well as, with the previous ideas in this hack. Once I had this idea locked in, I then had to decide what song or artist I was going to look into and use for this project, and I wanted to use a song with a deeper meaning that might not be as known amongst other communities besides the Latino one. This is when I landed on Bad Bunny because as some may be aware, Bad Bunny has used his music in order to advocate for different issues that the Latino community has faced such as displacement of natives in Puerto Rico, violence of LGBTQ+ members, and machismo. For example, in his music video for “Yo Perreo Sola,” Bad Bunny dressed in drag throughout as a statement about respecting women and bringing attention to trans women in the community who should be treated in the same manner because they are women as well. He has stated many times that he feels he needs to use his platform to make a difference in the communities that enjoy his music, whether they want to listen or not. Though his music is widely known because of how catchy it is, I felt that sometimes his message flies under the radar, especially when people are unaware of the weight his lyrics carry when all that they can understand is the beat. So, due to this, I decided Bad Bunny would be the perfect artist to highlight in this project. I also decided that his song, “Andrea” would be the perfect song to translate because it’s a personal favorite of mine, not only because I love how it flows, but also I love the message behind it. As a Latina woman, I found this song to be similar to my own and other’s sentiments, it has become increasingly obvious in my learning, reading of the news, and independent research that women in Latin America face much more hardship than men because of machismo. I felt this song is catchy, and I’ve heard it played around when I’m in public, but maybe people don’t know the lyrics or the message behind it, and I wish Spotify would implement translating songs to allow for more listeners to interact with music in the way that artists intend.

My playlist next to the actual lyrics provided by Spotify

I definitely found translating lyrics to be a much more difficult task than creating a recipe book, perhaps because Bad Bunny uses more complex language than ingredients or instructions would, or perhaps because my translation differs from another person’s as was mentioned in class, but once I finished the first verse, I felt accomplished about my project and what I would be presenting to the class. For this hack, I think I would label it, “concierto mobile” since it showcases Spotify’s Karaoke/lyrics feature similar to a personal concert and naming it in Spanish to also showcase the translation feature to it.

Research

Reddit

Believe it or not, Reddit was a big help in my creative thinking & process for this project because I was aware that other people had used Spotify in these similar ways that I had begun using playlists and folders in Spotify. When I found r/weirdspotifyplaylists, I began a deep dive into what was being created with all the different and unique songs that are readily available on Spotify. With every look into all of the playlists, I felt my idea growing under the surface, waiting to be found.

I even found a website that a user had created that could create this playlists with whatever you inputted for it, if Spotify contains a song with the words you searched, showcasing how this playlist creation format has become popularized throughout the world, allowing people to show creative freedom, send messages, and whatever else their heart may desire. I even used Weird Spotify in order to search for words that were giving me trouble when I was creating my own playlists.

Bad Bunny

Besides research into the different playlists that were being created by Reddit users, I also had to do research on Bad Bunny for this project in order to showcase just how important my decision of using his music was for me. Bad Bunny is a Reggaeton artist from Puerto Rico who has famously used his platform to advocate for different communities within the Latino community because he believes in justice for all, even staring into the face of violence or hatred in order to send his message. The biggest example I can think of his advocacy in his work is through his music video for “Yo Perreo Sola” because he dressed in drag in order to help advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and women all around with his visuals and his lyrics despite the ridicule he received for his work because of the machismo that exists in the communities that he is popular in.

Andrea

Though his biggest example of advocacy, in my opinion, is through this music video, this is not the only time when Bad Bunny ruffles some feathers with his work. Arguably, I believe he does this a lot with his work as he uses his lyrics to talk about current issues affecting his community. With that being said, I found that “Andrea” would be the perfect song to showcase for this project as it is another beautiful example of Bad Bunny using his platform to advocate for women, violence against women, and vulnerable communities. When Bad Bunny first released this song many of his fans speculated that he had created it in response to a murder case in Puerto Rico at the time, where a woman named Andrea Ruiz had been failed by the legal system as she tried to fight for her abusive ex-boyfriend to be arrested or file a restraining order against him but was not granted this, and just a month later she was found dead, with gruesome injuries on the side of the road. Though Bad Bunny has come out and said he did not write this song about her specifically, he and myself, find it powerful that many viewed the song in this way because it showcases just how well his words flowed to bring attention to gender-based violence in the Latino community, so much so that fans connected it to a specific cased. Although it sucks that this advocacy is needed since gender issues are widespread throughout Latin America, I’m glad that someone has taken it into their hands to help with bringing the attention to the media.

FLOG #13

This week has flown by as we have just been focusing on sharing our presentations for Hack #4 in both Tuesday and Thursday’s classes. My biggest struggle this week was trying to complete my hack because I was bouncing around from idea to idea because I felt like what I had come up with wasn’t good enough for the guidelines of this last project. So, my biggest issue was trying to think of ways to expand my project because I really wanted to take the time to try and work more with what I had previously been working with on Spotify, which is using song names and playlists in different ways than they were originally intended. At the end of the day, my final product of having the song lyrics in the playlist translate a song in a different language than its original feels like a good outcome for my project. Although it was time consuming, it does highlight this issue with Spotify that has even been brought up by several users. Now, as I go into the weekend, I have to focus on the final portfolio of my work that I need to submit during the exam period.

FLOG #12

For this past week, there wasn’t much going on for class since we didn’t have class or any work for Tuesday and we only had two readings for Thursday, which I found pretty interesting seeing as to what has been happening recently. Even on my TikTok page, there has been mention of the Blue Origin ordeal and how rich people try to paint what they do in a positive light when they in fact benefit from destruction, pollution, and extinction. Why are we humans trying to get to space or start fresh anywhere else when we could work on what we have now and not, “concepts of a plan.” We also learned what our next hack would be about, which is about fine-tuning one of our previous hacks to expand it. I’ve been thinking and am pretty sure I want to expand my Spotify recipe book, but with more substance. Whether that is making the playlist length the actual time it would take to make the item or something else, I want to delve deeper into that hack.

FLOG #11

My fail of the week was struggling to put together my video for the fourth hack because it’s been a busy time of the semester, so I haven’t had much time outside of class to work on assignments. However, I asked for an extensions so I used Wednesday night and Thursday morning to finish my video for class. I think my topic was informative, but I had a feeling it would make some of the class uncomfortable because of the topic, so maybe that is another fail. However, I had already found some video collections to use and thought it would be more difficult to start over from scratch rather than just continue with what I had so far, seeing as I barely had time to finish the one I had already started.

Artist Statement #4

For our fourth hack of the semester, we were asked to remix different forms of media in order to use them to create something new. This proved to be somewhat a difficult task for me since there is so much that can be looked into with all of the media provided on the internet. When I first started looking into ideas of what I could focus my remix on, I just went through the different databases or provided resources aimlessly to see if anything would strike me as a good idea to look into more. This caused me to think of doing a piece focused on the fast food/junk food industry in the US because of the large amounts of ads, commercials, and campaigns that have occurred throughout the decades in America as well as that being a large portion of what I found in one of the resources that was provided. Another idea that I believed I could have done was about fast fashion and how it is convenient for consumers but has so many negative effects for the environment and laborers, even trying to connect it to Henry Ford’s assembly line and usage of illegal laborers or outsourcing to other countries with lower wages. However, I believed this would be a much larger task than I could take on with this project, So I decided to stick with my advertisement idea because there is so many news segments ad advertisements that connect this idea and allow me to create a newly remixed piece. From this project, I learned more about food corporations and their tactics. It’s scary to see how much companies pour into their advertisements and marketing campaigns in order to entice young, impressionable minds. The usage of lovable cartoon characters and recognizable celebrities has made it much easier for corporations to advertise their foods, showcasing their greed and lack of care for the health of their customers. I also learned about the US and how the food laws are not as strict as in other countries because of American’s want for freedom in all decision-making. However, is this freedom of choice worth the dangerous choices that could be made by ignorant consumers.

Inspiration

Once I had honed in on the idea of food advertisement and how corporations focus more on selling their product rather than on the health and safety of their consumers, I began thinking about my travels and how I could connect that back into the readings:

  • When I visit Mexico, I tend to visit the local OXXO or family owned convenience store to purchase a snack or drink because of convenience for me. However, whenever I purchase these items, I notice these black hexagons on the packaging warning me and other consumers about “excessive calories” or “excessive sodium” in order to help inform consumer decisions.
Taken from: “A Look at Food Warning Labels in Mexico”
  • When I visited Japan I found the food market to be very different than it is in the US. For example, it is more common for products to be packaged in single serving sizes rather than the usual “shareable” or “family” size that we commonly see amongst the shelves in the US. There are also more restrictions on what can be sold to consumers. (For example, it was very difficult to find Hot Cheetos because of restrictions on Red 40 and other dyes.)

My Video Creation

Design Choices

The reason why I titled my video the way that I did is because there are many people who are unaware of the different chemicals and additives that goes into their food because sometimes they trust too much in government agencies such as the FDA to protect them.

FLOG #10

For this week, I’ve been working on my fourth hack is it’s due next week. I have been super busy outside of class because of work, my sorority roles, focusing on what I will do over the Summer (applying to jobs & internships), as well as working on other projects for other courses. I was finally able to grasp an idea for my fourth hack after talking with my group during our work day on Thursday, so that was helpful. I decided to do a piece focusing on the way food has started to cause an epidemic of obesity and other health issues, and putting this side by side with advertisements directed towards children for certain unhealthy foods to showcase how media has allowed these issues to flare up and how companies tend to lie or focus their ads towards children to sell more product without focusing on how this will affect the child’s health.

FLOG #9

Unfortunately I think attendance was my biggest fail this past week. I missed class on Tuesday for personal reasons, but this is when Hack #4 was introduced so not being there kind of screwed me over because after reading the instructions, I am still lost. For this reason, I will be asking for help this week about the hack or else I will have nothing to present next week. Another continuous fail is that I am submitting this FLOG past its due date because I keep forgetting the deadline and I apologize, my sorority has been stealing my attention and I have struggled to find a balance between the two, but I am working on it.

FLOG #8

So… I think my biggest fail of the week was forgetting to submit my FLOG by the end of the day last Friday. I always manage to forget doing this assignment until after the due date, approximately around 1 am on Friday nights, but this time takes the cake because the next FLOG is due tomorrow. Anyways, reflecting on last week, I think my biggest fail was not fully doing the readings because I was super busy with other things outside of class and had little time to do the readings since most of my classes are reading intense. However, better late than never, so I am going to try to set an alarm or reminder about submitting my FLOGs from now on.

Artist Statement #3

For my third project, I decided to use Spotify, a music streaming application, in a way that derives from the typical usage of it. For those who may not know what Spotify is used for, it is one of the largest mobile music streaming softwares in the world. It allows people all around the world to listen to all types of music, providing more artists than Apple Music, comparatively. For my project I decided to use Spotify as a journal of sorts, using folders, playlists, and songs to create a recipe book, with a playlist describing the necessary ingredients and another playlist describing the step by step process of making an apple pie. This project could definitely be expanded in a way that perhaps sound follows each step/ingredient in order to help people connect music to their cooking or baking journey.

After viewing the A/B list in Speculative Everything, I decided that I wanted to pursue my hack in the aspect of fun (A) /humor (B) because there was not as much of a critique which was visible in my previous gap, the reskinning of Mouse Trap. I think I also looked at this list and found it a little difficult to connect to my project because it wasn’t as deep in meaning, but looking further into my reading it became increasingly easier to visualize how viewers should interact with my project. “The viewer should experience a dilemma: is it serious or not? Real or not?” (Dunne) When people view my playlists, I want them to think to themselves about whether the instructions and ingredients listed will actually provide them with a classic American dessert when its all said and done.

A/B list showcased in Speculative Everything

After initially having trouble beginning my design, I honed in on this aspect of the creation of critical design, “when technology is always assumed to be good and capable of solving any problem.” (Dunne) Having such a difficult time trying to think outside of the box and come up with a new idea for an app’s usage, I realized that thinking more critically about the apps that I used everyday would provide me with a clearer vision of what I could be capable of doing for this hack. Before I had my idea in using Spotify I had a completely blank mind because I have a structured life with specific apps/websites that I use everyday for work, school, communication, social media, and more. With so many apps being constantly created and having a pretty straightforward purpose, it made it difficult to think of a fresh idea. However, asking around for ideas and reading about innovation from tools that would be considered simple by today’s standards allowed me to fully open up my mind to new possibilities. Although apps seem to be focusing on one specific realm, we have more free will that allows us to use them in different unique ways to help or entertain ourselves. Besides my idea, Canva could be used in a number of ways that are not intended for marketing purposes such as creating a mind map or using it to take notes even though most of their audience is using it for the purpose of social media and marketing.

I keep going back to the example used in class where a previous student had used Minecraft to create their Outlook Calendar and it really helped me think of new ways to use other applications. It reminds me of when someone is stuck in a routine, they sometimes tend to forget to break from this routine or even notice things around them because of how focused they have become. However, breaking from the ordinary can help make us more creative, thus further innovating on current things such as apps or even everyday household items. Along with critical design and being innovative, this was a form of remixing.

Reflection

This specific hack has been the most difficult for me to work on because of how creative it was asking me to be. It was difficult for me to think of an app and try to figure out a different way to use it. Since there are so many apps and websites available that have distinct purposes, it was difficult to try and use an established piece of software in a different way than it was supposed to be intended for. When I was thinking of my different options, I tended to just think of a different app that already had that purpose and doubted that my idea was a good one. I also figured that it would be difficult to execute some of the ideas I had because some applications or websites have specific purposes and may not have as much wiggle room to explore other concepts. However, through this project I learned that there seems to be many more functions to apps and such that I wasn’t aware of. Especially in Spotify, I had found that separating songs into just playlists would have made my project a bit more inconvenient, but finding out that there were folders installed in the application helped my process go even more seamlessly. I also found out that there were many artists with strange names for their songs on Spotify, whereas Apple Music tends to hold more professional artists under record labels in their collections. Along with the song names, I also found that there could be a connection between the sound of the music and the visual of the reading of song names explaining details. Maybe there could be a way that a different song could be listened to and allow a listener to remember what step they were on or what ingredient was needed next.

FLOG #7

This week has been high stress for me as most of my classes have decided to assign larger projects for this week. I also struggled immensely with trying to figure out what to do for my third hack because I found it difficult to think outside of the box and use a software for a different purpose than what it is initially intended for. I think this is because many softwares are created for certain purposes, and since there are so many softwares that could be used in a better manner than the ones I was thinking of, it made it increasingly difficult to remove myself from the mindset of a consumer and instead focus on the A/B list used to design and critique work. I also had to re-read some of the readings from previous weeks in order to add to my artist statement because I had slightly skimmed some of them and forgot what I had read because I hadn’t annotated. This set me back in accomplishing my artist statement because I wanted to make sure I was incorporating the readings more as per my feedback from my last artist statement. I also struggled to do the readings for Thursday because of everything on my plate this week, but I got it out of the way as a means of procrastination from other bigger projects.

FLOG #6

This week, we didn’t have anything due as we had presented our last hack the week prior and are currently working on our hack due next class. However, i am kind of in a pickle as I don’t really know what I’m going to do for this next hack. I have started thinking about different apps and their purposes and thinking about it in the opposite direction but I’m having a writer’s block of sorts. I am going to try and hone in on my plan over the weekend so that i can have my hack ready for class on Tuesday. Other than that, I’m feeling and doing good, I did all of the readings for this week and was able to participate in class because of this. I also enjoyed the playing of the Oregon Trail even though we weren’t able to finish the game. 🙁

FLOG #5

For this week’s FLOG, most of it will be focused on my process for Hack #2. As I had previously mentioned, my previous idea for this project was to redesign the game of Operation. However, I had made a change, good thing I did because another group used this game and they did a really good job at redesigning the game into a critique about exploitation of material/people in Africa. Anyways, I continued with the idea of redesigning Mouse Trap instead, which was interesting because I hadn’t realized that the game itself had been redesigned in recent years. Because of this, it was harder to find a physical version of the actual board, so I decided to do a virtual version of the game so that I could use the older version of the game as the aspect of creating the mouse trap was kind of important to my vision. However, now I’m starting to think that I could have created a version with the newer version of the game. I might look into that for the future.

Artist Statement #2

Redesigning a Board Game to Form a Critique

For Hack #2, I decided to use the board game, “Mouse Trap,” and redesign it to focus on the life of Immigrants residing in the United States. I used my own experience as having parents in this exact situation in order to influence my decisions for the design of the board game. I renamed my board game as, “House Gap” which could be misleading as someone may think am trying to discuss the issue of homelessness in America. However, I chose this name because Latinos tend to create a shelter, or “house,” out of their situations, but America is not their “home” per se. The goal of the game is to create a home, however that may be. For some Latinos, this means returning to their home country with the wealth and knowledge they were able to obtain in the US whereas for others, this means creating a space of belonging in the US because they have rooted themselves and their families in a new space and are finally comfortable. I also chose to use the word gap for the name because there is this deep sense of not belonging amongst Latinos living in the United States. They feel as though they are living in between two different worlds, too different for either one. Gap is defined as a “break in barrier” which relates to the physical break once Latinos cross the border between Mexico and the United States, but also with the idea of “a separation in space,” because of this unified feeling of not belonging and being within two different cultures while also trying to navigate other aspects of everyday life.

CONTEXT: How To Play the Original Mouse Trap

Trial & Error

For my second hack, I had originally decided that I would focus on the board game, “Operation,” as the structure for my reskin because I had been focusing on the idea of looking deeper in the illegal organ trafficking that is not talked about as much as other forms, such as sex trafficking, and yet is still an issue. The World Health Organization highlights that this form of trafficking has increased immensely in the past few years, and sometimes even goes hand-in-hand with sex trafficking. However, I decided against this topic and board game for my hack because I felt as though I wouldn’t be able to convey my ideas clearly enough or successfully in order to reskin “Operation” to the best of my ability.

An issue that I ran into when completing this hack was trying to redesign the actual board and box of the board game. My topic is serious, and the design of the board game is heavily marketed towards young children, so it is quite fun and whimsical. I wanted to create this redesign in a respectful manner, so trying to make decisions that keep the feel of the original game while also showcasing a serious topic caused me a bit of trouble.
