Inclusion and Accessibility<\/b><\/h2>\n

We are committed to the principle of inclusive learning. This means that our classroom, our virtual spaces, our practices, and our interactions should be as inclusive as possible. Mutual respect, civility, and the ability to listen carefully before speaking are crucial to inclusive learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The college welcomes requests for accommodations related to disability and will grant those that are determined to be reasonable and maintain the integrity of a program or curriculum. To make such a request or to begin a conversation about a possible request, please contact the Office of Academic Access and Disability Resources by emailing AADR@davidson.edu. It is best to submit accommodation requests within the drop\/add period; however, requests can be made at any time in the semester. Please keep in mind that accommodations are not retroactive.<\/span><\/p>\n

Academic Use of AI<\/b><\/h2>\n

This course obviously embraces the digital world. But it also strives to maintain a critical distance from technology, given the harmful social, political, and ecological ramifications of the indiscriminate use of computing and computing power. When it comes to large language models like ChatGPT, we must be especially careful to use the technology responsibly, in ways that do the least amount of harm to individuals and communities, including your own education and our own classroom. My general rule of thumb is that if your use of AI authentically deepens your understanding of a subject matter or a way of knowing, it might be considered acceptable; but if your use of AI short circuits your understanding, or leapfrogs over the most difficult aspects of a way of knowing, then it is not acceptable, and even dangerous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I will provide specific guidelines on acceptable and unacceptable uses of AI on a case-by-case basis for each assignment or project in this class. What might be permissible for one kind of assignment may not be permissible for another assignment. In general, I will ask three things:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Never pass off the work of generative AI as your own.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Any work generated by a tool such as ChatGPT or Claude must be cited as such.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The accuracy and validity of any AI-generated work is automatically suspect, and you are responsible for verifying and correcting that work.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Failure to follow any of the above guidelines will be considered a violation of Davidson\u2019s <\/span>Honor Code<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Academic Integrity<\/b><\/h2>\n

    Students at Davidson College abide by an Honor Code. The principle of academic integrity is taken very seriously and violations are treated gravely. What does academic integrity mean in this course? Essentially this: when you are responsible for a task, you will perform that task. When you rely on someone else\u2019s work in an aspect of the performance of that task, you will give full credit in the proper, accepted form.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Another aspect of academic integrity is the free play of ideas. Vigorous discussion and debate are encouraged in this course, with the firm expectation that all aspects of the class will be conducted with civility and respect for differing ideas, perspectives, and traditions.
