{"id":805,"date":"2025-01-18T23:13:35","date_gmt":"2025-01-19T04:13:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.digitaldavidson.net\/dig401\/?post_type=jetpack-portfolio&#038;p=805"},"modified":"2025-04-29T09:26:44","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T13:26:44","slug":"work","status":"publish","type":"jetpack-portfolio","link":"https:\/\/courses.digitaldavidson.net\/dig401\/portfolio\/work\/","title":{"rendered":"Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the work for this class consists of a series of design projects, which we will call \u201chacks.\u201d Each hack revolves around a theme or challenge and requires an accompanying Design Statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/courses.digitaldavidson.net\/dig401\/work\/hack-1-play\/\"><b>Hack #1 (Play): <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This hack asks you to create a playful interface to some digital tool. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hack #1 is ungraded. <\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/courses.digitaldavidson.net\/dig401\/work\/hack-2-critical-play\/\"><b>Hack #2 (Critical Play): <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This hack is a critical intervention into an existing game or playful space. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hack #2 is worth 15% of your final grade.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/courses.digitaldavidson.net\/dig401\/work\/hack-3-software-invasion-2025\/\"><b>Hack #3 (Software Invasion):<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This hack requires you to do something interesting with an existing piece of software by using it the wrong way. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hack #3 is worth 15% of your final grade.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/courses.digitaldavidson.net\/dig401\/hack-4-remix\/\">Hack #4 (Remix):<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this hack you\u2019ll <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appropriate existing cultural material and remix it in a transformative way. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hack #4 is worth 15% of your final grade.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/courses.digitaldavidson.net\/dig401\/hack-5-beta-release\/\"><b>Hack #5 (Beta Release): <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this final hack you will build upon one of your previous hacks, taking it to the next level. If your original hack was the alpha version, this is the beta. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final hack is worth 15% of your final grade.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two other components of the class:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flog (Failure Log):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is a weekly failure log, kept blog-style. You\u2019ll set up the flog on your Davidson Domain, on a WordPress site devoted to this class. The flog gives you a chance to reflect on things that don\u2019t work for you in this class. It may be something that\u2019s not working with one of your projects, something you don\u2019t understand with the weekly reading, or anything else related to the course that just isn\u2019t optimal. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flog is worth 15% of your final grade.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/courses.digitaldavidson.net\/dig401\/final-portfolio-2025\/\">Final Portfolio:<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The portfolio is an online exhibit of your work, with a reflective frame around that work. Your portfolio will be an act of curation, preservation, and contemplation. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final portfolio is worth 15% of your final grade.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Attendance and Engagement<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your participation in this course is crucial. Engagement comes in many forms, not just attendance. Taken holistically, engagement includes (but is not limited to) the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Preparation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(reviewing readings and material before class)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Focus <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(avoiding distractions during in-person and online activities)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Asking questions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in both synchronous and asynchronous forms, and in class and out of class)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Specificity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(referring to specific ideas from readings and discussions)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Synchronous presence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (verbally and nonverbally engaged during synchronous activities)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Asynchronous presence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (being responsive on Moodle and email)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engagement is worth 10% of your final grade.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please note Davidson\u2019s campus-wide attendance policy. Missing more than 25% of class meetings will result in an automatic F for the class. In our case, that means more than 7 absences.
